Mbale district is a tourist destination for Eastern Uganda. It neighbors the largest National Parks of Mt. Elgon forest park, plain-upe National Game reserve and various scenic places in and outside the district. It has scenic tourist attractions like, the Old Caves in Wanale and Budwale, Bamasaaba circumcision, snowcapped Mt Elgon, interlocking spars, ridges, and steep slopes.
The district is well endowed with fresh water supplies from the Mt. Elgon water shed with numerous rivers flowing to the lowlands, fertile volcanic soils especially on the ridges transcending the slopes and ridges of the Elgon, good climate, and good scenery.
A lot of tourists prefer the comfortable accommodations in Mbale above all the Mt Elgon National park which provides linking tours through beautiful mountain regions of sipi fall at the Northern side of the mountain.
Beside the, physical features encompassing Fauna and Flora, the district is home to Medical and Scholastic tourism.
Mbale hosts multiple medical facilities profound of which is the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital that attracts a number of visitors from the neighboring districts of Busia, Budaka, kibuku, kapchorwa, Bukwa, Butaleja, Manafwa, Mbale, Pallisa, Sironko and Tororo and CURE Uganda a specialty teaching hospital that treats the neurosurgical needs of children with an emphasis on conditions like hydrocephalus, neural tube defects, spina bifida, and brain tumors. It is Africa’s leading hospital for the treatment of these conditions.
In the education sphere,Mbale has several training institutions both in rural and municipality which attract education tourists from the region and beyond. Among the countries that benefit from these services include Rwanda, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Nigeria, South Sudan and Burundi.
The rural Mbale hosts Nyondo PTC, Elgon Technical, Bungokho Rural Development Centre and Salem Nursing School, while the Municipality hosts Uganda Management Institute, Management Training and Advisory Centre, Bugema University, Uganda Christian University, Islamic University in Uganda, Mbale polytechnic, Busitema University, Uganda Martyrs University, Institute of Management Science and Technology, Mbale School of Clinical Officers, School of Hygiene, Mbale school of Nursing and Midwifery, Makerere Center for continuing education.
