Mbale is host to two cultural sites, that is, the Mutoto cultural site and the Kakungulu hills cultural site.
The Mutoto cultural site hosts the "Imbalu"/circumcision ceremony. The sons of three clans of the Bamasaaba, namely, Mwambu, Wanale and Mubuya convene in the month of August of every even year to be initatiated in adulthood through circumcision.
The site is located in the sub-urban Bungokho-Mutoto subcounty on the outskirts of Mbale municipality
The kakungulu Hills cultural site is the burrial place for the famous Buganda warrior and historical british collaborator Semei kakungulu.
It is the place he staged camp during his time as the administrator of Bukedi region/Eastern Province. it became his residence and later burrial place.
The site is located in Namanyonyi subcounty 5km from Mbale Municipality and is a stronghold of the Jewish religion(Abayudaya) which was introduced in the area by Kakungulu.
